Gustave  Dore    (1832 —  1883)

This painter, illustrator and sculptor was born in Strasbourg. He made his name in England through his illustrations of many classics, Rabelais, Balzac and Dante and his work for The Illustrated London News during the Crimean war. His English Bible was published in 1865. His contribution to the Arabian Nights is notable. His work is crammed with lively activity. He is the only artist to depict convincingly Sinbad's frightful entombment in the Pit of the Dead from the fourth voyage.
