Hundreds of people have illustrated
the Arabian Nights over the centuries, making it one of the most
profusely illustrated works of all time. It's difficult even to know
who all of the illustrators are, since many did not receive credit for
their work.
The Nights is one of the few works of literature illustrated by
many different illustrators. Many of the scenes in the Nights are so
compelling that several different illustrators decided to illustrate
them. Two, in particular, stand out. The first is the scene in Ali
Babba and the Forty Thieves where Morgania pours boiling oil into the jars containing hidden
thieves. Secondly, there is the giant bird, the Roc
(or Rukh). What illustrator could resist drawing the Roc, a bird so
large it feeds elephants to its young?
The list below is, of course, not complete, but it contains all of
the illustrators we've been able to track down. If you know of an
illustrator missing from this page, please contact us.
